Shiunko Purple Cloud Balm

The balm is crafted with a natural herbal formula, combining sesame oil and extra virgin olive oil for a smooth, lightweight texture that absorbs quickly and deeply nourishes the skin. Its natural purplish-red hue comes from Lithospermum root, free from artificial colouring, with some customers enjoying it as a lip balm for a subtle, natural glow. The scent carries gentle notes of Angelica root and sesame oil, creating a unique herbal-nutty aroma that feels pure and comforting, offering a soothing touch to the skin.

Historical Background

Formulated in the Ming Dynasty (16th century) by physician Chen Shigong, this balm was later refined with added lithospermum for enhanced efficacy. Known as “Shiunko” in Japanese medicine, it remains a trusted topical solution across East Asia. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that the active compounds in Lithospermum root, such as Gromwell Red and Shikonin, support skin regeneration and possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

How to Use

Apply 2-3 times daily on cleansed skin.

• Conduct a patch test prior to first use
• Avoid application on open wounds or severe infections
• Consult a GP if pregnant or using alongside steroid creams
• Store below 25°C, away from direct sunlight
  • Our clinic’s balm are made from natural ingredients with no chemical additives, preservatives, or mineral oils.
  • If stored in a warm environment, the balm may develop oil spots or become softer – this is a normal occurrence and does not affect its use.
    If the balm softens due to direct sunlight, you may place it in the fridge (0°C to 7°C) for around 5–10 minutes to allow it to solidify and return to its original state.
